Hysteroscopy and Polyps
A polyp is an abnormal tissue growth on the mucous membrane. These are small, flat bumps or tiny mushroom-like stalks usually less than half-an-inch wide. Polyps can develop in various parts of the body like:
- Colon
- Uterus
- Cervix
- Throat
- Stomach
- Nose
- Ear canal
Most polyps are benign (non-cancerous) and very few of them are cancerous.
Endometrial Polyps:
These are very common and are formed on the inner wall of the womb. Symptoms of endometrial polyps include irregular menstrual bleeding, bleeding between menstrual periods, heavy bleeding during periods. In some cases, polyps may lead to infertility and their removal can help regain the ability to become pregnant. Irregular menstrual bleeding can also be caused due to cervical polyps which develop on the surface of the cervical canal.
Diagnosis and Treatment:
Hysteroscopy:
How can hysteroscopy help with polyps?
With the help of hysteroscopy, your doctor might be able to:
- Diagnose polyps
- Remove endometrial or cervical polyps
- Perform biopsy of the endometrial lining
- Treat other intrauterine problems and issues related to heavy menstruation
Hysteroscopy has many advantages as compared to other methods of treatment:
- It is minimally invasive, it does not require large incisions in the body.
- The recovery time is very less as compared to other techniques.
- The patients can go home the same day after hysteroscopic surgery.
- The pain is minimal.
- There is no wound, hence, fewer chances of developing infections.
