Tips for painless normal delivery

Author: Dr. Sandhya Mishra MBBS, DNB, MS – Fellowship in ART

Consultant: Reproductive Medicine at Motherhood Hospital Indiranagar Bangalore

Childbirth is a transformative and miraculous journey that brings excitement and apprehension to expectant mothers. While labour pain is natural, many women aspire to have painless childbirth. Fortunately, various techniques and approaches are available to manage labour pain effectively and promote a positive birth experience. Let’s explore strategies and natural childbirth techniques to help you aim for a painless and empowering normal delivery.

How To Plan For Painless Normal Delivery?

One of the most important steps towards achieving a painless normal delivery is acquiring knowledge about the birthing process. Attend childbirth education classes or workshops that teach you about the stages of labour, breathing techniques, and relaxation exercises. Understanding what to expect during labour will help alleviate fear and empower you to actively participate in your birthing experience.

Opt for Natural Childbirth Techniques

Natural childbirth techniques can significantly contribute to pain management during labour. These techniques focus on working with your body’s natural abilities and include:

a. Breathing Techniques: Deep, rhythmic breathing helps you relax and manage pain. Practice breathing patterns such as slow breathing, panting, or the “hee-hee-hoo” technique to find what works best.

b. Relaxation Exercises: Learn relaxation techniques like visualisation, guided imagery, and progressive muscle relaxation to reduce tension and promote calm during labour.

c. Movement and Positioning: Changing positions frequently, such as walking, rocking, or using a birthing ball, can help manage pain and facilitate labour progress. Experiment with different positions that provide comfort and relieve pressure.

Continuous Labor Support

Having a supportive birth partner, doula, or midwife during labour can make a significant difference in managing pain. Their presence provides emotional support, encouragement, and physical assistance. They can remind you to relax, offer comforting touch, and guide you through different pain management techniques.

Hydrotherapy and Warm Compresses

Water therapy (such as a warm shower or soaking in a birthing pool) can help relax your muscles and relieve pain during labour. Warm compresses or hot packs on your lower back or abdomen can ease discomfort and promote relaxation.

Acupuncture and Acupressure

Alternative therapies like acupuncture and acupressure can be effective in managing labour pain. Acupuncture involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body, while acupressure applies pressure to these points using hands or massage techniques. Both methods stimulate the release of endorphins, natural pain-relieving hormones.

What is Hypnobirthing ?

Tips For labour support

Hypnobirthing is a technique that uses self-hypnosis, relaxation, and visualisation to reduce anxiety and pain during labour. By creating a positive mindset and learning to release fear and tension, hypnobirthing can help achieve a more comfortable birthing experience.

Communicate with Your Healthcare Provider

Discuss your desire for a painless normal delivery with your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance, support, and information on pain management options available during labour. If you prefer a painless injection for delivery, inquire about the possibility and feasibility of such an option.

Remember, every birth experience is unique, and staying flexible and open-minded is essential. While aiming for a painless normal delivery is admirable, it’s equally important to prioritise your and your baby’s safety and well-being. Ultimately, the goal is a positive birth experience where you feel empowered and supported.

The proper preparation, support, and pain management techniques can achieve a painless normal delivery. By educating yourself, practising natural childbirth techniques, seeking continuous labour support, exploring alternative therapies, and communicating with your healthcare provider, you can increase your chances of having a pain-free and positive birth experience. Embrace the journey of childbirth with confidence, trust in your body’s abilities, and surround yourself with a supportive birth team for an empowering and memorable birth.

What Changes Can I Expect in My Body During Pregnancy ?

Pregnancy Body Changes

Author: Dr.Manisha Tomar MBBS, DND, DGO

Consultant: Obstetrician & Gynaecologist Motherhood Hospital, Noida

Congratulations on your pregnancy! It’s an exciting journey filled with new experiences and changes. As an expecting mother, it’s natural to wonder about the transformations that will occur in your body during this miraculous time. I’m Dr. Manisha Tomar from Motherhood Hospital, and in this blog, I’ll discuss the changes you can expect in your body during pregnancy.

What is Hormonal Shifts?

During pregnancy, your body undergoes significant hormonal changes. The levels of progesterone and estrogen increase, contributing to various physical and emotional changes. These hormonal shifts play a vital role in supporting your baby’s growth and development.

Weight Gain During Pregnancy

As your baby grows, you’ll experience weight gain throughout pregnancy. The recommended weight gain depends on your pre-pregnancy BMI and can vary between individuals. It’s important to maintain a healthy weight gain under the guidance of your healthcare provider to support your baby’s well-being.

Expanding Belly:

Your growing baby will cause your belly to expand gradually. As the uterus expands, you may notice a rounded abdomen and feel the baby’s movements, known as quickening. Embrace this beautiful transformation as a symbol of the life growing within you.

Breast sensitivity in pregnancy

Changes In Breast During Pregnancy :

Pregnancy triggers breast changes to prepare for breastfeeding. Your breasts may become larger, tender, or feel more sensitive. The areolas (the darker area around the nipples) may also darken. These changes are normal and help prepare your body for nourishing your baby.

Skin Changes:

Pregnancy hormones can lead to various skin changes. Some women may experience hyperpigmentation, particularly on the face, known as the “mask of pregnancy” or melasma. Stretch marks may also appear on the abdomen, breasts, and thighs. These changes are temporary and usually fade after childbirth.

Fatigue and Mood Swings:

Hormonal changes and the demands of pregnancy can cause fatigue and mood swings. It’s important to listen to your body, rest when needed, and seek emotional support from loved ones. Engaging in relaxation techniques and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help manage these changes.

Frequent Urination During Pregnancy:

As the uterus expands, it puts pressure on the bladder, leading to increased urinary frequency. You may find yourself visiting the restroom more often during pregnancy. It’s important to stay hydrated and empty your bladder regularly to prevent urinary tract infections.

Joint and Ligament Changes:

Pregnancy hormones loosen the ligaments and joints to prepare your body for childbirth. This can lead to increased flexibility but also a higher risk of joint discomfort. Gentle exercises, proper posture, and wearing supportive footwear can help alleviate any discomfort.

Conclusion:

Pregnancy is a remarkable journey that brings about numerous changes in your body. Embrace these changes as signs of the incredible transformation happening within you. Remember to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about any concerns or questions you may have.

At Motherhood Hospitals, we have a team of experienced supers specialists backed by the latest infrastructure and facilities. We have the best gynaecologist in Noida. We are experts in handling complex deliveries, gynaecological, and other surgeries including a range of laparoscopic surgeries.

How Can I Confirm That I Am Pregnant?

Signs of pregnancy

Author: Dr. Manisha Ranjan MBBS, MGO, FGO, DGO

Consultant: Obstetrician & Gynaecologist Motherhood Hospital, Noida

Congratulations! If you suspect that you may be pregnant, you’re embarking on an incredible journey of motherhood. As a gynecologist at Motherhood Hospital, I understand the importance of confirming your pregnancy and the mixed emotions that come with it. In this blog, I will guide you on how to confirm your pregnancy and provide some valuable insights.

Recognizing Early Pregnancy Symptoms:

While the most reliable confirmation of pregnancy comes from medical tests, it’s common to experience early signs and symptoms that hint at your pregnancy. These can include missed periods, breast tenderness, fatigue, frequent urination, nausea, and changes in appetite. However, it’s important to note that these symptoms can vary from woman to woman, and some women may experience no symptoms at all.

Home Pregnancy Tests:

Home pregnancy tests are widely available and can be easily done in the comfort of your own home. These tests detect the presence of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. It is recommended to take the test after you’ve missed your period, as it increases the accuracy of the results. Follow the instructions provided with the test kit carefully for the most reliable results.

Pregnancy Tips

Confirming with a Blood Test:

If your home pregnancy test shows a positive result, it’s essential to confirm it with a blood test conducted by a healthcare professional. A blood test measures the hCG hormone levels more accurately than a urine test, providing a definitive confirmation of pregnancy. Your doctor may also conduct other blood tests to assess your overall health and check for any underlying conditions.

Seeking Professional Guidance:

Once you have confirmed your pregnancy, it’s crucial to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider, such as an obstetrician or gynecologist. They will guide you throughout your pregnancy journey, ensuring your health and the well-being of your baby. During your first prenatal visit, your doctor will conduct a thorough examination, review your medical history, and provide personalized care and advice based on your specific needs.

Ultrasound Examination:

To assess the development and health of your baby, your doctor may recommend an ultrasound examination. This non-invasive procedure uses sound waves to create images of the uterus and the growing fetus. The ultrasound helps determine the gestational age, confirm the number of embryos, and check for any potential complications.

Conclusion:

Confirming your pregnancy is an important step towards embracing the remarkable journey of motherhood. While home pregnancy tests provide an initial indication, it is vital to consult a healthcare professional for confirmation and proper prenatal care. Remember, every pregnancy is unique, and seeking professional guidance will ensure that you receive the necessary support, monitoring, and advice for a healthy pregnancy.

Pregnancy after 35: Risks and benefits

Pregnancy after 30

Author- Dr. Nilofar Yelurkar MBBS, DGO, DNB

Consultant – Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospitals Kharghar, Mumbai

Here’s an insight on the risks and benefits of pregnancy after thirty-five.

Why is pregnancy after thirty-five difficult?

We are aware of the fact that each woman is born with a certain number of eggs. An egg is released each time a woman ovulates about 14 days before periods. With advancing age, the egg count and quality deteriorate and make it difficult for the woman to get pregnant. With the ticking biological clock, more fertility problems come into the limelight. Therefore, pregnancy after 35 is considered difficult.

High-risk pregnancy complications –

The high-risk pregnancy complications include

  • Premature birth
  • Birth defects
  • Getting pregnant with multiple
  • Pre-existing diabetes
  • Gestational diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Preeclampsia
  • Miscarriage
  • Stillbirth

In-depth analysis of the complications:

Late Pregnancy

Premature birth is when the baby is born too soon. It invites health problems in the later stages of life. The baby might have low birth weight in this case. It may be less than 5 pounds. Hormonal changes and fertility treatments shoot up the chances of being pregnant with multiples in older women. On the other hand, if the woman is grappling with pre-pregnancy diabetes, it might bring in more complications. Moreover, there are chances of developing gestational diabetes and high blood pressure and an even higher chance of developing preeclampsia. Preeclampsia happens in the 20th week or after pregnancy. In this case, some organs might not be working properly due to high blood pressure and the signs include severe headaches, vision changes, and higher protein content in urine. Birth defects like down’s syndrome could affect the baby adversely. One can go for screening tests like cell-free fetal DNA screening (maternal blood screening) to know if the baby is at a higher risk for a birth defect.
It is thus recommended to consult a high-risk pregnancy doctor. Doctors for high-risk pregnancy care are known as perinatologists. These are maternal-fetal medicine specialists known as obstetricians. They are specialized in high-risk pregnancy care.

Consulting a gynecologist for geriatric pregnancy could suit your needs. The best gynecologist for high-risk pregnancy in Bangalore can be easily found online. You can refer to the internet for appointments.

Benefits of getting pregnant after 35:Research highlights and more

Well, geriatric pregnancy isn’t just about high risk. There’s a positive side too. Your child can benefit from an older mom way more than you can think. Not just the child, these benefits reach out to the mother too. Here’s an insight into the benefits –

  • A study published in the journal of the American geriatrics Society highlights that women who had their last child after 35 had sharper cognition and verbal memory. Having a baby after 35 years of age boosts brain power.
  • Studies highlight that the risk of unintentional injury in the child declines with increasing maternal age.
  • There is an undoubted sense of maturity with age. Older moms are more mentally prepared. Several studies and research highlight that maturity plays a role in better parenting. Children of older moms are thus better behaved, well socialized, and emotionally healthy in their pre-teen duration.
  • Children of older moms benefit from the educational and social progress that has been made in the days of delayed chilbearing.

How to differentiate between implantation bleeding and period blood?

implantation bleeding versus period bleeding

Author – Dr. Kavya Krishna Kumar MBBS, FMAS, MS

Consultant – Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospitals Alwarpet, Chennai

The onset of pregnancy is marked by implantation bleeding. Bleeding during early pregnancy occurs about 10-14 days after conceiving a baby and is a normal sign.
Why does it occur? The timing :

After an egg is successfully fertilized by a sperm the resulting embryo starts dividing and growing. At this moment, the inner lining of the uterus, called the endometrium, starts to change. Apart from thickening through the menstrual cycle, it grows and matures to nourish the embryo.

The zygote gets implanted into the uterine lining. This causes a part of the uterine lining to shed hence causing a little bleeding, to be more specific, the embryo implantation disrupts the tiny blood vessels in the spot it burrows into.

Why is it difficult to differentiate between the two?

Since this bleeding happens around the time of your menstrual cycle, it is difficult to identify the difference between period spotting and implantation bleeding.
Here are a few insights that would help you identify the differences between the two.

The coloration: color of the blood is different

Period bleeding starts as a light pink or brown shade and soon turns into crimson red. Unlike period spotting, implantation bleeding begins as a rust-colored stain. It is more of a pinkish-brown shade than that of a period stain.

The flow:heavy or a light flow?

The period starts off light and the flow gets stronger with time. One can feel the transition with the passing time unlike the implantation bleeding wherein one experiences a super light spotting.

Cramps:mild, moderate or intense?

Another way to differentiate period spotting from implantation bleeding is by the cramps. Although it has been found that the cramps experienced by women largely depend on the body type, in general, it has been observed that implantation causes short-lived cramps. This is just three opposite of period cramps that are more intense and long-lasting.

Clot formation:happens or not?

The period spot is marked by clots – a mix of blood and tissue. But implantation bleeding doesn’t result in clot release. There are no clots in implantation bleeding. The consistency of the flow can also be cited as a point to differentiate between the two. Implantation bleeding is an on-and-off spotting, unlike the period spot that starts off light and continues with heavy progress.

Other signs and symptoms that accompany implantation bleeding:

Implantation bleeding is accompanied by other signs like swollen breasts, headache, and woozy feeling but period bleeding doesn’t come up this way.
Pregnancy blood test and ovulation calculator: the best way to differentiate between the two

However, estimates suggest that there is no way to tell the difference between the two. It is only a pregnancy test that could confirm the type of bleeding. A pregnancy blood test costs a minimal amount and is quite easy to go for. It’s just that you have to give your urine or blood sample for the test.

Period and ovulation calculator could help regarding the same but it largely depends on the body type. The above insights are thus based on the common experiences shared by women.

Ovulation Calculator- Know Your Most Fertile Days

track your ovulation

Author – Dr. Preethika Shetty MBBS, DNB, M.S(OBGY), Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine (ICOG)

Consultant – Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospital, Kharadi, Pune

If you are trying to get pregnant, do you know when you ovulate? Ovulation is the process in which a mature egg is released from the ovaries, which is referred to as the most fertile period for conceiving. It happens every month usually halfway of the menstrual cycle i.e. around the 14th day of the average 28-day cycle. So, to increase the chances of getting pregnant, it is better to know the days that are most fertile for it.

Quick fact: Most ovulation calculator tools can predict your ovulation by asking about the date of the first day of your last period and the average length of your menstrual cycles.

Ovulation calculator

For each menstrual cycle, there are about 6 days during which pregnancy can occur which are referred to as the fertile window or the time of ovulation, and it can be different for every woman. The estimation of this fertile window is given by the ovulation calculator which is based on a woman’s last menstrual date.

Signs and symptoms of ovulation

The common signs and symptoms that are to be noticed for ovulation are:

  • There can be change in the sustained basal body temperatures where it can fall slightly and then rise again.
  • The mucus in the cervix can become thinner and clearer.
  • Cervix can open up due to softening
  • One may feel breast tenderness as well
  • Some may feel light pain in the lower abdomen along with some mild cramps
  • There may be swelling in the vulva or vagina

Ovulation calendar and preparation

There are some steps that may help in the preparation and pinpointing the time of ovulation, like:

  • Keeping a menstrual cycle calendar can give you an idea of when it is most likely the ovulation can take place where you can use tools like pregnancy and ovulation calculator to estimate the same
  • Body symptoms can be usually felt like twinge of pain or cramps that point towards ovulation.
  • Keeping track of your basal body temperature which can be lowest during ovulation and rise as soon as ovulation occurs.
  • You can buy an ovulation predictor kit to identify the date of ovulation by looking at the levels of LH (luteinizing hormone), the hormone that rises before ovulation. They are usually available at the chemists.

Pregnancy ovulation calculator

From the figures of your pregnancy ovulation calculator, you can get an estimated date when you are likely to be fertile. Perfect ovulation calculator is not possible for all menstrual cycles, for some can be regular and irregular. It can be helpful in the case of a regular menstrual cycle, as there is no 100 percent accurate ovulation calculator. When it comes to ovulation calculators for irregular periods, ovulation urine tests or ovulation tracking may be helpful. It is better to consult your health care professional and seek further guidance in this case. Ovulation tracking is a process to identify the days during which you are the most fertile by tracking the hormone cycle, which are at a surge during ovulation. Using simple blood and ultrasound tests, you can detect the hormonal surge and know about your ovulation. Besides, it is a more advanced and accurate ovulation calculator than home ovulation prediction kits.

Make Your Pregnancy Stylish

"How to stay stylish during pregnancy? "

Author – Motherhood Medical Team

Pregnancy poses a challenge of being up to date and following the fashion trends that may convert you into a stylish being. While it cuts out some alteration in the living patterns, there are ideas and ways to try out for making your pregnancy a stylish one.

There can be some transitions to map out this thing while also considering the safety approaches that must be followed during the pregnancy.

Staying Stylish During Pregnancy

  • The foremost thing that is important during pregnancy is the mental look you can cast on yourself so that you look sharp and put together. There is no need to feel grumpy all the time, though a pack of hormonal rush can induce so sometimes. However, you need to feel yourself and try to be excited about each single day, trying out some new ideas.
  • You don’t need to hide your tummy completely. One can wear form-fitting clothes, as long as they are covering your belly completely.
  • One can easily wear some old cardigans and blazers, open. This has to make a good fashion sense when fitted over a tank or camisole. In this way, the ready to go casual outlooks can make a great stylish fit.
  • Maternity or nursing printed dresses can make you feel comfortable as well as ready to head out on the way when paired with a sandal.
  • One can also choose to wear heels to give a better look. While stilettos and heels can be difficult to accommodate, wedges and kitten heels are safe as well as stylish to make you comfortable.

Author: Dr. Richa Singh MBBS, DGO, DNB

Consultant – Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospital Kharghar, Mumbai
