Radical Hysterectomy
A Radical Hysterectomy is a surgery that is deployed to treat different types of gynecological cancers such as cervical cancer and ovarian cancer. Here the doctor surgically removes the uterus, cervix and a portion of the vagina along with the connective tissue that encapsulates the cervix, referred to as parametrium.
If it is found necessary, even the ovaries, fallopian tubes and lymph nodes in the vicinity will be extracted. A radical hysterectomy involves removal of the whole uterus, tissues lined on the sides of the uterus, cervix, and a portion of the vagina. Radical hysterectomy is decided upon usually when a cancer is detected. This is different from a total hysterectomy where the whole uterus and cervix are removed.
