All About Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Author: Dr. Sharvari Mundhe MBBS, MS,DNB, FRM,DRM
Consultant:  Gynaecologist and fertility Specialist at Motherhood Hospital Sarjapur

Introduction

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a common metabolic condition in women. Some women struggle to get pregnant and are at high risk of developing certain complications during pregnancy. However, by managing the symptoms, many women with PCOS can get pregnant and have a healthy baby. PCOS in pregnancy is a condition where ovaries produce higher levels of androgens (male hormones). This can affect women’s menstrual cycle, fertility, and appearance. Symptoms include:

  • Cysts in ovaries
  • Infertility
  • Weight gain
  • Insulin resistance

Diagnosis It often takes a while for women with PCOS to get a firm diagnosis, as the condition can mimic other problems. Sometimes, women having trouble getting pregnant find that they have PCOS. If a woman faces symptoms of PCOS, it is important that she sees a gynaecologist to find the cause of the symptoms. With early diagnosis, the symptoms can be treated early. This reduces the risk of complications, if the woman decides to get pregnant.

At her appointment, the important things to do are:

  • Talk to her about the condition and examine her
  • Suggest a blood test in order to check for male hormones
  • Arrange ultrasound scans to look for cysts in the ovaries

PCOS and Infertility

If a woman has PCOS, she might also struggle to get pregnant. This is because of male hormones, which prevent the release of eggs, called ‘ovulation’. Losing as little as 5% of excess weight can help women ovulate better and lessen other effects of PCOS. Woman can increase the chances of getting pregnant by:

  • Healthy diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Maintaining a healthy body weight
  • Monitoring the ovulation and timing sexual intercourse around ovulation

If the woman has made some changes and that still hasn’t worked, we might suggest her to go for fertility tests and medications to help her ovulate. Another option is IVF, which offers the best chance of ovulation. However, we understand this can be expensive and is usually considered when all options have been unsuccessful. Fortunately, with lifestyle changes or infertility treatment, a majority of women get pregnant.

PCOS and Pregnancy

Having PCOS increases some complications during pregnancy like:

  • Miscarriage
  • High BP induced by pregnancy
  • Premature birth
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Higher likelihood of needing a C-section delivery because babies might be larger than expected, in case of gestational diabetes

The risks of these complications can be reduced by monitoring PCOS symptoms, taking care of diet, and doing exercises during pregnancy.

Working Long Hours — Effect On Physical And Mental Well-Being

Author: Dr. Sucheta Parte MBBS, DGO
Consultant: Obstetrician and Gynecology at Motherhood Hospital Lullanagar, Pune

Working from home has given us the luxury of flexibility, and the ability to log in from the comfort of our own homes. Unfortunately, it has also brought with it the curse of fatigue and long working hours. It is important to know how to deal with the physical and mental toll that this can take on you, the right way.

Performance and Productivity
As employees, we are always focused on getting the job done, irrespective of how long it takes. However, according to a study by The Institute for Employment Studies, UK — working long hours, when coupled with sleep deprivation, actually causes a decline in performance. In short, adding more hours to your day can heavily impact your productivity and quality of output.

Keep it Moving
Sedentary working patterns often have a negative impact on your body. Research from The Institute for Employment Studies reveals that sitting at a desk for long hours impacts mental health negatively, and can also cause cardiovascular disorders. With minimal movement and activities, your body is more prone to muscle fatigue and other diseases. Take your calls as you walk around the house, or do quick workouts at your desk to minimise this risk.

Find the Right Balance

Working long hours affects us and our loved ones. Finding the perfect work-life balance may not be easy, but it is important — ensure that you allocate enough time to also nurture your relationships. At Motherhood Hospitals we have a team of experienced supers specialists backed by the latest infrastructure and facilities. Parenting Hacks While Working From Home

Author: Dr. Peeyoosh Rankhamb MBBS, DCH
Consultant: Paediatrician and Neonatologist at Motherhood Hospital Kharghar Mumbai

Working from home — this new normal has got us glued to our laptop screens and mobile phones all day. But what about your child who needs to be fed, or your infant who has just woken up and started crying?

Parenting — especially in the present circumstances, can be challenging and exhausting. Here are a few tips that can help you balance the fine line between an efficient employee, and a great parent.

Fix a Schedule

Providing a structure to your day can help you work and manage kids at the same time. Draw up a daily routine — plan in advance, allocate time for work calls and meetings, and ensure that you have enough time to engage with your children.

Take Regular Breaks

Taking a well-deserved break or two during your busy day is as important as your client meetings. Timely intervals help refresh your mind and also give undivided attention to your little ones — play a favourite game, read a book, or even paint your child’s nails.

Make Meetings Fun
Work can take over your day at even the most unfavourable of times. Turn your meetings into a game for the children — if they participate in quiet activities such as painting or reading a book during your meeting, they get a special treat! Soon, your kids will be looking forward to it.

Set Standard Work Hours

Working from home gives us the opportunity to have flexible hours, but parents often tend to feel guilty and work beyond standard operating hours. It is crucial to not burn yourself out with excessive work. Split your day into ‘work’ and ‘family’ time so that it is easier for you and for your children to adjust to the new normal.

Seek Help if you Need
Seeking extra help if there is too much on your plate is important. Children deserve care and attention, and the current scenario may not be accommodating. Entrust your child’s care to a friend or a family member — even if it is for a few hours each week. It will give you and your children a break.

At Motherhood Hospitals we have a team of experienced supers specialists backed by the latest infrastructure and facilities. We have the best Paediatrician in Kharghar, Mumbai that consists of a team of paediatric specialists that cater to all the needs of children, across age groups, and provide the best care for your child’s development.

Do make an appointment with the  best children’s hospital in Kharghar, Mumbai at a centre closest to you. Meet with our doctors, who will carry out the required investigations, diagnose the issue and recommend the most appropriate treatment, enabling you to lead an active life.

Eating Healthy During The Pandemic, And While Working From Home

Author: https://www.motherhoodindia.com/doctor/dt-nisha/
Consultant:  Nutrition & Dietetics at Motherhood hospital Gurgaon

Staying healthy has to be your number one priority, especially during these uncertain times. While working from home, sometimes nutrition and eating healthy can take a backseat. How do you then ensure that you do not compromise on your health or eating habits? We’re here to help!

Shop for Your Meals in Advance

It is always better to have a structure in place when it comes to planning meals. To avoid running out of food, or time to cook, make sure you shop for an entire week and plan each day’s meals in advance. Use the weekends to prep your meals so that you can cook quickly during the week..

Make Time for Meals

Work may require you to spend a lot of time in front of the screen, but it is imperative that you schedule a time for meals. Opt for food that can be eaten out of a bowl, so that you can type and eat at the same time.

Try Real Food

Processed food may be convenient, but the long-term effects of such a diet can be disastrous. Swap out the junk for real food and you’ll soon notice a visible difference in your energy levels. Ensure you have a healthy mix of protein, carbohydrates, fat, and fibre in your daily diet.

Drink Lots of Water

One of the main reasons for fatigue is dehydration. Even looking at a screen for long hours can dry your skin and eyes. A bottle of water on your work desk is a great idea to remind yourself to stay active, productive, and hydrated.

Add Dried Fruits and Nuts to the Diet

To keep the mid-afternoon hunger pangs at bay, snack on dried fruits and nuts. These tiny bites are powerhouses of energy and essential vitamins — ideal to support a healthy metabolism. A small serving, if consumed daily, can provide various health benefits.

Did You Know?

  • In recent times, we have been flooded with an overload of information on what we should or shouldn’t do while working from home. Here are some interesting facts and figures that we found.

  • 52% of the Indian population reveal that they felt more productive working from home.

Fun Diets For Early Development In Children

Author: Dr.Amit Gupta MBBS, MD, KGMC, PGPN
Consultant: Paediatrician & Neonatologist Motherhood Hospital, Noida

Children are most active in their early childhood. This makes healthy eating habits combined with physical activities crucial for their early development. Here are some nutritious hacks to encourage better diets for children that’ll make sure they’re never out of energy:

Cutting Out Sugar

A child can receive all necessary sugar intake from natural sources. Added sugar only brings in empty calories, causing problems like hyperactivity, mood disorders, type 2 diabetes, and much more. So what are some of the smarter alternatives?
Have a look:

  • Maple syrup
  • Mashed organic fruit
  • Coconut sugar

Reducing Junk Food

As most kids are attracted to junk food at some age, it is nearly impossible to hold them back from it completely. However, parents can cut down the number of times they consume junk food in a week or month, and monitor their eating habits to eliminate the intake of extra calories and sugar.

And here are some effective substitutes that can be used in the process:

  • Baked fries
  • Home-made snacks
  • Protein bars

Did You Know?
A report showed that 50% of baby food snacks and 83% of toddler food snacks contain added sweeteners.

Making Fruits and Vegetables More Appealing

While kids don’t always eat what’s healthy for them, it is easy to help them consume the necessary proteins with a little bit of twist. Allowing children to pick the produce is a great way to help them understand and interact with the different kinds of fruits and vegetables. It is also easier to sneak in grated or shredded vegetables into dishes for an appealing, yet healthy meal.

At Motherhood Hospitals, we have a team of experienced super specialists backed by the latest in infrastructure and facilities. We have the best Paediatricians in Noida that consists of a team of paediatric specialists that cater to all the needs of children, across age groups, and provide the best care for your child’s development.

Lack Of Exercise In Women

Author: Dr. Teji Dawane, MBBS, MD (OBGYN)

Consultant: Senior Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Whitefield, Bangalore

The modern woman juggles multiple roles and responsibilities, breaking conventions along the way. But is health taking a backseat in this journey?
Is a balanced lifestyle easy to maintain in this modern race of life? Well, studies have shown that lack of exercise causes health risks for women, especially over the age of 30. This makes it even more crucial for women to maintain a physically active lifestyle. Here are some basic hacks.

Did You Know?

According to WHO, up to 5 million deaths a year could be prevented if the global population was more active.

Finding Time

Women are occupied with many roles and responsibilities – be it parenting, professional work, or other personal errands. This makes it hard to find time to pay attention to their bodies, leading to long-term health issues. The best way to overcome this is to exercise when there’s an opportunity. A quick 10-minute session every day or simply walking to the nearby park can bring a positive change to the body and will help stay active.

Parenting and Care

Many women are caught up with their little ones, making it harder for them to look after themselves. The best way to overcome this is to seek help from partners or family members. A helping hand can lend time for quick workout sessions or even a jog around the neighbourhood.

Overcoming Fatigue

A major contributing factor to health problems is fatigue. Although this is an inevitable element in modern lifestyles, it can be avoided with an active mindset. Regular exercises and activities help combat fatigue and cope with the demanding needs of an urban lifestyle

Goal Setting

Set goals and targets! The easiest way to attain a balanced lifestyle is by setting achievable targets and keeping a track of progress. A positive mindset will always allow one to push themselves and make an impact on day-to-day errands – resulting in satisfying outcomes

How to Aim for Painless Normal Delivery?

Tips for painless normal delivery

Author: Dr. Sandhya Mishra MBBS, DNB, MS – Fellowship in ART

Consultant: Reproductive Medicine at Motherhood Hospital Indiranagar Bangalore

Childbirth is a transformative and miraculous journey that brings excitement and apprehension to expectant mothers. While labour pain is natural, many women aspire to have painless childbirth. Fortunately, various techniques and approaches are available to manage labour pain effectively and promote a positive birth experience. Let’s explore strategies and natural childbirth techniques to help you aim for a painless and empowering normal delivery.

How To Plan For Painless Normal Delivery?

One of the most important steps towards achieving a painless normal delivery is acquiring knowledge about the birthing process. Attend childbirth education classes or workshops that teach you about the stages of labour, breathing techniques, and relaxation exercises. Understanding what to expect during labour will help alleviate fear and empower you to actively participate in your birthing experience.

Opt for Natural Childbirth Techniques

Natural childbirth techniques can significantly contribute to pain management during labour. These techniques focus on working with your body’s natural abilities and include:

a. Breathing Techniques: Deep, rhythmic breathing helps you relax and manage pain. Practice breathing patterns such as slow breathing, panting, or the “hee-hee-hoo” technique to find what works best.

b. Relaxation Exercises: Learn relaxation techniques like visualisation, guided imagery, and progressive muscle relaxation to reduce tension and promote calm during labour.

c. Movement and Positioning: Changing positions frequently, such as walking, rocking, or using a birthing ball, can help manage pain and facilitate labour progress. Experiment with different positions that provide comfort and relieve pressure.

Continuous Labor Support

Having a supportive birth partner, doula, or midwife during labour can make a significant difference in managing pain. Their presence provides emotional support, encouragement, and physical assistance. They can remind you to relax, offer comforting touch, and guide you through different pain management techniques.

Hydrotherapy and Warm Compresses

Water therapy (such as a warm shower or soaking in a birthing pool) can help relax your muscles and relieve pain during labour. Warm compresses or hot packs on your lower back or abdomen can ease discomfort and promote relaxation.

Acupuncture and Acupressure

Alternative therapies like acupuncture and acupressure can be effective in managing labour pain. Acupuncture involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body, while acupressure applies pressure to these points using hands or massage techniques. Both methods stimulate the release of endorphins, natural pain-relieving hormones.

What is Hypnobirthing ?

Tips For labour support

Hypnobirthing is a technique that uses self-hypnosis, relaxation, and visualisation to reduce anxiety and pain during labour. By creating a positive mindset and learning to release fear and tension, hypnobirthing can help achieve a more comfortable birthing experience.

Communicate with Your Healthcare Provider

Discuss your desire for a painless normal delivery with your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance, support, and information on pain management options available during labour. If you prefer a painless injection for delivery, inquire about the possibility and feasibility of such an option.

Remember, every birth experience is unique, and staying flexible and open-minded is essential. While aiming for a painless normal delivery is admirable, it’s equally important to prioritise your and your baby’s safety and well-being. Ultimately, the goal is a positive birth experience where you feel empowered and supported.

The proper preparation, support, and pain management techniques can achieve a painless normal delivery. By educating yourself, practising natural childbirth techniques, seeking continuous labour support, exploring alternative therapies, and communicating with your healthcare provider, you can increase your chances of having a pain-free and positive birth experience. Embrace the journey of childbirth with confidence, trust in your body’s abilities, and surround yourself with a supportive birth team for an empowering and memorable birth.

7 Things You Should Always Discuss with Your Gynecologist?

gynaecological check-ups

Author: Dr. Sandhya Mishra MBBS, DNB, MS – Fellowship in ART

Consultant: Reproductive Medicine at Motherhood Hospital Indiranagar Bangalore

Regular consultations with a gynaecologist are essential for maintaining optimal health and well-being for women. Open communication with your gynaecologist is crucial whether you are scheduling a routine gynaecological check-up or seeking advice for specific health concerns. This blog will highlight seven essential topics you should discuss during your gynaecologist consultations. These discussions will help address your health concerns, ensure appropriate preventive care, and promote overall women’s health.

General Health Concerns

During your gynaecological check-up, discussing your general health concerns is essential. While your gynaecologist specialises in reproductive health, they are vital to your overall well-being. Be open about any medical conditions, medications you are taking, or family history of diseases. This information helps your gynaecologist provide comprehensive care and identify potential risk factors.

Menstrual Health and Irregularities

Discussing your menstrual health is crucial during gynaecological appointments. Share information about your menstrual cycle, including the duration, flow, and any irregularities you may be experiencing. Your gynaecologist can help determine whether your menstrual pattern is normal or if further investigation is required to address irregularities, such as heavy bleeding, missed periods, or severe pain.

Contraception and Family Planning

gynaecologist consultations

If you are sexually active and not planning to conceive, discussing contraception options with your gynaecologist is essential. They can guide you through various birth control methods, including pills, patches, intrauterine devices (IUDs), or implants, to find the most suitable choice. Furthermore, your gynaecologist can provide valuable preconception care and fertility evaluation guidance if you plan to start a family.

Sexual Health and STI Prevention

Sexual health is a vital aspect of overall well-being. It is essential to openly discuss any concerns or questions related to sexual activity, sexual dysfunctions, or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Your gynaecologist can guide safe sexual practices, recommend appropriate screenings, and offer preventive measures against STIs.

Menopause and Hormonal Changes

If you are approaching or experiencing menopause, discussing the associated hormonal changes and symptoms with your gynaecologist is crucial. Your gynaecologist can help manage menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, mood changes, vaginal dryness, or sleep disturbances. They may also guide hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or alternative treatments to alleviate menopause-related discomfort.

Breast Health and Breast Examinations

Breast health is of utmost importance, and regular breast self-examinations are recommended. However, discussing breast health and any concerns you may have with your gynaecologist is beneficial. They can guide you on the correct technique for breast self-examinations, educate you on the signs of breast abnormalities, and recommend regular mammograms or other imaging tests based on your age and risk factors.

Reproductive Health and Fertility

If you are planning to conceive or have concerns about your reproductive health, your gynaecologist is an invaluable resource. They can evaluate your fertility, guide optimising conception chances, and offer preconception counselling to ensure a healthy pregnancy. If you have been struggling with infertility, your gynaecologist can refer you to a fertility specialist for further evaluation and treatment options.

Regular consultations with a gynaecologist are crucial for maintaining optimal women’s health problems. By openly discussing these seven important topics during your gynaecology appointments, you can address your health concerns, receive appropriate preventive care, and ensure your well-being. Remember, your gynaecologist is there to provide support, guidance, and personalised care, so don’t hesitate to raise any questions or concerns. Your proactive approach to gynaecological check-ups will contribute to a healthier and happier life.

FAQs:

  1. How often should I schedule a gynaecological check-up?
It is generally recommended to have an annual gynaecological check-up, especially for women who are sexually active or above the age of 21. However, the frequency may vary based on individual factors and your gynaecologists recommendation.

  2. What should I discuss during my gynaecological check-up regarding general health concerns?
During your check-up, it’s important to discuss any general health concerns you may have, such as medical conditions, medications, or family history of diseases. This information helps your gynaecologist provide comprehensive care and identify potential risk factors.

  3. How can I address menstrual irregularities during my gynaecological appointment?
Discussing your menstrual health, including the duration, flow, and irregularities, is essential during your appointment. Your gynaecologist can assess whether your menstrual pattern is normal or if further investigation is required to address any irregularities you may be experiencing.

  4. What are the contraceptive options I can discuss with my gynaecologist?
Your gynaecologist can guide you through various contraception options, including pills, patches, IUDs, implants, or other methods. They can help you choose the most suitable contraceptive based on your needs and preferences.

  5. What can I expect regarding reproductive health and fertility discussions with my gynaecologist?
If you are planning to conceive or have concerns about your reproductive health, your gynaecologist can evaluate your fertility, provide preconception counselling, and offer guidance to optimise your chances of conception.
